Everything Isn’t Politics

Everyone has heard the aphorism “Everything is politics,” and I get it — through a certain lens, particularly at this moment in American history, it can certainly seem that way.

But it’s not.

Compassion isn’t political. Neither is kindness, or love. Making art, caring for someone as a nurse, doctor, or loved one, being a parent or teacher; none of these are political either.

Music might be the best example. Go to any concert and you will be surrounded by people whose political beliefs (or lack thereof) are the last thing on their minds — and you can be sure they are all over the place. The audience is simply there, united in their love of the music this artist makes, the thing that makes their life better.

So how about we give politics a rest?
