I came across this while listening to Elon being interviewed by Lex Friedman on his podcast. It’s interesting to see his thought process when approaching manufacturing and business. For us mere mortals just trying to get difficult things done, the first three are good starting points for pretty much anything.
Elon Musk’s 5-step algorithm, often referred to as “the algorithm,” is a process he uses to improve efficiency and effectiveness in various aspects of his businesses. Here’s a concise breakdown of the steps.
- Question every requirement. Challenge all assumptions and requirements, regardless of who made them. Ensure each requirement is tied to a specific person, not just a department, so it can be properly scrutinized.
- Delete any part or process you can. Remove unnecessary components or steps. Musk suggests deleting more than you’re comfortable with, as you should end up adding back at least 10% of what you’ve removed.
- Simplify and optimize. Once you’ve questioned requirements and deleted unnecessary elements, focus on simplifying and optimizing what remains. Avoid optimizing processes that shouldn’t exist in the first place.
- Accelerate cycle time. After completing the first three steps, look for ways to speed up the remaining processes. Ensure you’re accelerating in the right direction.
- Automate. Only after completing the previous steps should you consider automation. Musk warns against automating too early, as you may waste resources on unnecessary processes.
This algorithm emphasizes critical thinking, simplification, and efficiency. It can be applied to various situations, from manufacturing processes to organizational structures, to reduce bureaucracy and improve overall performance.
