I’m of the opinion that nobody will bother to read far enough to even discover the plot unless the characters are interesting — so for me, it’s all about the characters. Mind you, others may feel differently, but hey, that’s why there are so many writers.
This topic is weird though, or rather, I’m weird. I’ve been obsessed with books and film my whole life, and I’ve always felt this way. Even to the extent that I can totally enjoy stories with essentially no plot, as long as the characters draw me in.
Of course, every story is different. At the moment, I’m working on something that’s very plot-driven because that’s what the story is and also because I need to keep growing and learning new things.
But at the end of the day, characters rule.
