It was wartime, Skip thought. I did what I had to. The problem was, regret doesn’t care about why. Regret’s about wishing you could take something back, about righting a wrong, about second chances. But there are no second chances when you take a life.

Some things you’ll either have to make peace with, or second guess until the day you die. Peace? Skip lit a cigarette and moved the pack around on the table. I don’t deserve peace. All I can do now is try to make up for it.
