This is a question worth thinking about: Once you make something, how does one make the world aware that it exists and might be worth checking out?
Brian Eno observed that historically, there were two ways for this to happen. The first was to be championed by an important person, i.e., someone in the public eye with cachet. The other was to be discovered as part of a “scene.” He even coined a word for this: Scenius.
Of course, today’s situation is muddied by social media—but how powerful can social media be when everyone is already trying to leverage it? Probably not much.
This problem is even present within creative industries. I recently heard film director Osgood Perkins interviewed about his new critically acclaimed film, “Longlegs,” and he talked about conceiving the script as a modern homage to “Silence of the Lambs” to garner interest in the project.
