When I take in a piece of art, it either works for me or doesn’t—and if something about it draws me in, I couldn’t yet explain why. There’s no thought involved; whatever’s going on is behind the scenes, working on a deeper level.
This is resonance.
Sometimes the artist builds it in purposefully, other times it’s an expression of something that’s difficult for them to articulate. Language itself can be a blunt instrument for human expression. This is why music works so well—it’s accessing the human experience on a universal level that doesn’t involve words.
One thing’s for sure, though. Resonance isn’t going to happen without clarity of vision.
So it’s worth asking yourself: What exactly am I trying to do?
